“Death is Nothing at All”

Artist Updates

I figured it was time for an update, mainly because I said that I’d return in mid-May, and here it is almost mid-June!

A lot has happened since I last updated, we sold our house, moved, and FINALLY settled in. Never realized how long it takes to finally get settled into a new living situation, both physically and mentally. Things were looking up.

Then my grandma passed.

I’m still reeling from her passing, it just seemed so abrupt to me, especially since we didn’t really get to say ‘goodbye‘ in a movie-perfect way. She’s been on my mind quite a bit and I’m still trying to come to grips with it.

Among other regrets, I’m sad that I’ll never get the chance to show her my first children’s book. I’ve realized that life is too short to hold back on my passions, so I’m diving headfirst into completing ABCs of Beasties this summer.

I have taken solace in this beautiful poem my sibling found, “Death is Nothing at All” by Henry Scott Holland. I’ve printed it out and will read through it when I get glum thinking about my grandmother.

My grandma loved guinea fowl, and so I decided to do a little drawing of a guinea feather in her memory. I’ve actually created another drawing about her years ago back in college that I’ll have to share sometime. I draw because it’s hard to articulate my emotions sometimes, hence…art!

A guinea feather, a gift from my grandparents, and my feather drawing.

“Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Nothing has happened.

Everything remains exactly as it was.
I am I, and you are you,
and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.”

Anyway, here’s to going full force on my passions in 2022. Thanks for hanging in there with me <3
